Mental Health & Co-Occurring Disorders

When Addiction isn't the Only Challenge

Alcohol and drug use issues almost never occur in a silo. For many young men, these issues aren't separate at all. Mental health challenges and substance use frequently develop together with mental health issues, physical issues, and in some cases a poor reaction to the drug used.

For some families, it becomes clear long before substance use enters the picture that something isn't right.

Maybe your son has struggled with anxiety since childhood. Maybe depression slowly stole his motivation. Perhaps ADHD made school feel impossible, obsessive-compulsive disorder created relentless stress, or bipolar disorder left your family riding emotional highs and lows that never seemed to make sense.

There's a lot of terminology around treatment for young men struggling with issues including substance use and mental health disorders, and it may seem like those issues need to be treated separately.

At Voyage Recovery, we believe recovery begins by understanding the whole person—not simply the addiction. That's why every young man who enters our program receives a comprehensive psychiatric, psychological, and clinical assessment designed to uncover the full picture of what's driving his substance use and what he needs to build lasting recovery.

Whether your son has an existing mental health diagnosis, is taking psychiatric medication, or you're wondering if there's more going on beneath the addiction, our clinical team works together to develop an individualized treatment plan that addresses both substance use and the underlying issues contributing to it.
