Yes. While Voyage is built around addressing substance use issues, the reality for us is that those issues occur with so many others. Most of the young men who arrive at Voyage are dealing with much more than addiction alone. Anxiety, depression, ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions commonly exist alongside substance use. Rather than viewing these as separate problems, we recognize that they often influence one another in complex ways.Determining whether Voyage is the right fit begins before admission. Our admissions team works closely with our clinical staff to review medical records, speak with family members, and learn about each prospective patient's history before making a recommendation.If we believe another level of care would better serve a young man's needs, we'll say so. Our priority is helping families find the treatment environment that offers the greatest opportunity for long-term recovery—even if Voyage isn't the right fit.For patients admitted to our program, the first several weeks are devoted to developing a thorough understanding of every aspect of their clinical presentation. Our psychiatrist and broader treatment team collaborate to create a treatment plan that addresses both substance use and any co-occurring mental health concerns.Voyage values our community relationships and has more than thirty years of connection in Jupiter, Palm Beach County, and areas beyond with talented providers across all fields of medicine and psychiatry. If we see issues that are not best treated by us, we will work with the patient and family to find the best chance for that man to get well.

This is often true. Clinicians today are increasingly seeing severe psychosis associated with high-potency cannabis (THC), stimulant misuse (Adderal for example), and other substances. Sometimes substance use develops as an attempt to cope with anxiety, depression, trauma, or other mental health conditions. In other cases, prolonged drug or alcohol use creates or dramatically worsens psychiatric symptoms.Some young men require stabilization before before coming to Voyage. There are times when, as we assess a patient, we see that their other mental health issues beyond substances are quite severe, even with the substance removed from their system. At Voyage, we view substance use as one part of a larger clinical picture. Recovery means helping young men understand how addiction interacts with their emotional health, relationships, thinking patterns, family dynamics, and overall well-being.The truth is that even for men who may have mental health issues that rival, or at times supersede, their substance use issues, those men still need to learn how to remain abstinent.Treating only the addiction while ignoring the underlying mental health condition rarely produces lasting change. Likewise, treating mental health without addressing ongoing substance use often limits meaningful progress.Both deserve careful attention because each influences the other.The conceptualization of a drug and alcohol issue must include how that issueworks with all other mental and physical health issues. The idea of waiting for someone to “hit bottom” in order to get well, goes out the window when mental health issues reassert themselves as a patient is using substances. There is no way for a patient in a major depressive episode, or a psychotic state, a manic state, or being haunted by obsessive compulsive disorder can even find the bottom. They are too compromised to help themselves. Voyage sees substance use occurring within a spectrum of mental health issues for most of our patients.

Within the first few weeks of treatment at Voyage, each patient goes through a comprehensive level of assessments.This process includes:Psychiatric EvaluationEach patient meets individually with our psychiatrist for a thorough psychiatric assessment, including diagnostic clarification, medication review, and recommendations for ongoing treatment.Psychological AssessmentPatients also complete an empirically validated psychological evaluation with our psychologist. When appropriate, additional testing may be recommended to better understand personality patterns, emotional functioning, cognitive processes, or other clinical concerns.Clinical & Family AssessmentThrough ongoing conversations with the patient and his family, our primary therapists develop a deeper understanding of substance use history, family dynamics, relationships, trauma, emotional development, and previous treatment experiences.Collaborative Treatment PlanningRather than relying on one provider's perspective, our entire clinical team reviews each patient's findings together. By integrating information from psychiatry, psychology, therapy, medical care, and family involvement, we develop an individualized treatment plan designed specifically for that young man's needs.Families remain actively involved throughout both the assessment process and treatment whenever clinically appropriate.

Medication decisions are never one-size-fits-all.When a young man arrives at Voyage, our psychiatrist carefully reviews every medication he is currently taking, along with his medical history, psychiatric diagnoses, and treatment goals.In some situations, existing medications continue as part of treatment. In other situations, medications may be adjusted or discontinued if they are no longer effective, are contributing to other concerns, or have become part of the substance use disorder through misuse or dependency.Certain medications are not compatible with an abstinence-based recovery program and may require alternative approaches. These decisions are always made thoughtfully, collaboratively, and based on each patient's unique clinical needs.Our goal is never to remove medications unnecessarily.
